Nepal’s parliament meets on Wednesday in a crucial session that is expected to confirm former Maoist rebel chief Prachanda as the Himalayan nation’s new prime minister after K.P. Oli stepped down to avoid a no-confidence motion.

Nepal has been mired for years in political instability, and the new leader will be its 24th prime minister after weeks of deadly protests established multi-party democracy in 1990.

This will be the 61-year-old Prachanda’s second turn as premier after his party of former guerrilla fighters won national elections in 2008.

Analysts say the return of Prachanda, who still uses his nom de guerre meaning “Fierce” but has lost his former Robin Hood image dating back to the insurgency, was unlikely to end the revolving-door politics that has sapped business confidence in one of the world’s poorest countries.

“I don’t think he will be stable,” said Guna Raj Luitel, editor of the daily Nagarik.

“There is no agreement between parties on a basic agenda for the country. They have only agreed for convenience and there is already a deal to change the prime minister after nine months.”

CPN Maoist Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal has been elected the new Prime Minister of Nepal.Speaker Onsari Gharti Magar announced that Dahal was elected the Prime Minister as he garnered more votes than 50 per cent of current strength of the Parliament.While total 573 lawmakers had cast their votes in the poll, 363 were for Dahal, according to Speaker Gharti. Dahal was backed by the largest party in the House, Nepali Congress, constituents of the United Democratic Madhesi Front and the Federal Alliance and some other fringe parties. Total 210 lawmakers including those of CPN-UML and Rastriya Prajatantra Party-Nepal had cast votes against the Maoist leader. Though Dahal was the only contender for the top executive position of the nation, he had to go through the voting as the Constitution requires that the Prime Minister has to prove support of the majority lawmakers at the House. Total 298 votes were needed for Dahal to be elected the PM from the existing 595 members of the House. It would be the second stint of the Maoist leader as the Prime Minister as he had led the government after the first Constituent Assembly elections, from August 18, 2008 to May 25, 2009. Prime Minister KP Oli had to resign after the key coalition partner, CPN-MC, withdrew its support from the government. The new government will be the ninth in the last eight years, reported The Diplomat. Oli’s government of CPM (Unified Marxist-Leninist) was formed soon after the promulgation of Nepal’s constitution and has served for nine months. Prachanda is backed by Nepali Congress – the largest party in Parliament – as the sole candidate for the position of the Prime Minister. Both these parties have agreed to form the government on a rotational basis. CPN-MC demanded leadership even while supporting the Oli government. As the report in The Diplomat states, Prachanda and the Nepali Congress had reached a consensus on toppling the government in May. However, soon after Oli promised the post of Prime Minister to Prachanda, he withdrew his offer to the Congress. Oli refused to acknowledge any such agreement. This incited tension between the two parties and put the government in danger.
